In Three acts we recorded the excitement and review of Madness fans attending Hackeny if you did or didnt make it, you can listen again to how joyus we all found the event. Each of the Acts features comments from the Band, Lee in
act I and III, Suggs in Act III and Mark and Steve in act II along with a genuine pearly king! Very london.

Here is some review...

FOLGATE'S FIRST STEPS

It began Monday. Let's have a rehearsal run.

Madness with Ian Horne locked away in the Hackney Empire spotted
by Alan Smithee, the band had been running through songs and things
all day, and in and out of the Old Ship Pub behind the venue,
putting the finishing touches to Folgate's unveiling.

Alan, checking out the area in advance for Tuesday night rings me,
telling me he can hear violinists during their fag break grumbling
that the way their parts were written was making it near impossible
to play and they were thinking of simplifying it... they also said
that their electric strings were really hard to tune to the brass
section ... but it all sounded great to Alan through the crack in
the stage door!

Through the wonders of his mobile phones up against closed stage
doors. I got to hear a new song. Not one we've heard yet for sure.

It was a two beat marching sounding song, very good from the
little snips I heard. As far as I could hear it was definitely
Suggs singing and the lyrics were...

mmmmmm mmmmm mmmmmm mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm

But then there was that door in the way.

:-)

This song would turn out to be a Polka. Who could have predicted
that one! Still the band rehearsed till Midnight on Monday putting
more finishing touches to the Folgate show.

Then the day of Folgate Dawned...

Jonathan Young/Alan Smithee's Phone

FOLGATE'S OPENING NIGHT - FIRST REACTIONS

An incredible day in Hackney. A great mad meet during the whole day
in The old Ship next to the venue in Hackney. With the backstage
entrance just next door in an alley at the back of the pub, to
witness arriving band members, passing fans and pearly kings and
queens entering the venue.

Nice to meet so Many fans during the day, including Owen from
the Nutty forum, a real top young dude with inflateable sax in
hand, to later be seen waving it in the crowd! and then coming away
with the set list taped to it at the end of the night!. Andrew
Langmead is a name it was nice to put a face to finally as well and
we enjoyed Our House together stood next to Clive Langer later in
the day. A great Mad meet full of excited anticipation from fans
and the band alike, but what of the show.

It's amazing gig of 2 halfs.

A bizzarre experience of completely new and reletively new songs
all presented in 3 acts. With an orchestra of the 3 violin monkeys,
the 4 actual violin girls and 1 extra clarenette player, sat in a
front of house orchestra pit position. They were playing an intro
with the curtain down before each of the 3 acts began, of music
orchestrated from the new songs. I am told this was at least in
part scored and arranged by Joe from the Violin Monkeys. Well done
Jo and everyone else in that team.

2nd set a short frenzy of familiar hits, with My Girl with it's
slow intro moved to the encore position quite effectively, and
almost equally fresh in some ways was the shorterned nature of
this set and the moved around order. This had the crowd bouncy
and sweating the heat in the theatre to noticable contrast with
the outside temperature. All four teirs of the old theater venue
dancing and singing like a concentrated happy collective.

It was amazing new material, great new varied songs, 14 track
names were listed on the front of the fold out poster programme
which was in the same style as the hackney poster but with more
vicotriana writing and the 02 flyer picture inside. But not all
of them were actually played Tuesday. &quot; That close&quot; was dropped
and not played. Lee told me the band hadnt done enough homework
on that one in time. Equally I dont remember new song &quot;Seven Dials&quot;
appearing anywhere either, showing how rehearsal work which has
been long and arduous, but fun im sure, not quite covering every
idea of what might make the new set for these shows. Focusing on
what did get played though, which was a truly brilliant pay off
for all the hard work the band have put in, the songs were nearly
all executed fantastically. A short immediate stop at the start
of Folgate it's self, but then bang brilliant all the way through
it. The experience was a polite and listening crowd trying to take
in the new songs, not the greatest of atmosphere or dancing during
the first set, due entirely to the familiraity gap, but attentive
ears. That said the single, live albums and internet effect did
make NW5 a big singalong, Norton It'self appreciated, and Forever
Young being crowd sung a bit too. Followed by a boom of dancing
cheering in part 2.

Again on the programme &quot;sun and the rain&quot; and &quot;shut up&quot; were listed
but I dont remember them being played on Tuesday night. I've a
feeling Wednesday Press night may be a little longer show and maybe
more new songs or hits might be played.

All in it was hard to take in all the new material at first, but it
was the most interesting presentation of a new Madness album ever,
and I've a feeling it'll be even better on the 2nd and 3rd nights.
Of the completely new songs arriving in this set. &quot;Clerkenwell
Polka&quot; is my favourite. I was not expecting a Russian traditional
dance themed song blended perfectly with the up beat Madness nutty
sound and it blew the crowd away to the biggest cheers for a
completely unheard song, with a bit of &quot;oh wow&quot; thrown in. Lee
Buckley said to me &quot;I think Carl wrote that&quot; based on his beaming
smile at the end. Carl played acoustic guitar during the songs.
Dust Devil I am sure I will love, it's got a lot of upbeatness
and fun lyrics, but that was my first hearing at this show. I've
still to hear it more. MKII which you can see rehearsals of on
youtube is really nice slow piano lead sad song, which is only 2
minutes long. We are London is clearly a Carl song, he sang
heavy on it playing acoustic guitar and it's equally a song about
London harmony, it name checked Camden lock and it's the words
he read out on a recent sky interview a few months back as reported
in MIS.

Now let's talk about Lost and found my friends, because not only
was Rohdar Dakar a surprise guest on track &quot;Out on the Town&quot; but
it's a song from &quot; The lost&quot; reclaimed. In the third lot of &quot; The
Lost&quot; that recently went up on the MTR and the MIS site. There is
a tune named as &quot;Mike on Piano&quot; ' inside I dont want to know' based
on the lyrics of what we could hear mike playing. Well that track
is called, and has been worked on and become, &quot;Out on the Town&quot;
with it's lyric refrain &quot;out on the town, sick and tired of your
frown&quot;. Obviously a relationship bickering lyric there, and so
elevated by the inclusion of a female singer and no better choice
than Rhoda. Really weird experience for me to hear this entirely
new song I knew nothing about and think to myself deja vu I know
this, I was wondering if it was a suggs tune for a brief minute
reworked and then it clicked. No Longer a lost, welcome home &quot;Out
on the town&quot; :-)

Another new track being mentioned by the band on the day was
called &quot;one fine day&quot; Lee and Woody both spoke about it. This
might appear at some point before album release. No Let's go.
Has it been let go? I really want to hear a studio version of
let's go but equally I think it was have stuck out as too
different to the songs Madness were playing in the new material
set. No appearance of Hunchback, or Africa so those rumoured
songs have yet to appear live.

Oh and I didnt see the naked Ballon dancers, but then I was
outside during the interval so couldnt comment on if the appeared
but no one mentioned them at any point. What did happen during
the interval is 2 Oliver style chimmeny sweeps, played Bingo and
a few other riffs on 2 banjo/ ukelele style string instruments in
a box left of stage. Which was equally cool addition.

The Full Folgate then. The bits we have heard on mood board,
steve wright show and even that extra snippet off the background
of sky news for it indeed was a part of Folgate and I've just
lost my bet with Patrick Murphy on that baby! We heard it all
and there is some repeating, returning to the same bits as well
a ####### market peice we've not heard in the track before. All
the theatre extras were dancing on stage, against the vicotrian
big screen backdrop stage set and Suggs appeared in a box at one
point, during this long song. The crowd joined in with the &quot;Ahhh
ahhh ahh ahh&quot; chant. While not everyone is liking Folgates
disjointed and overblown grandeur, and it's a bit like a reworked
part of the our house musical in the new middle, I personally lapped
it up and for the first time understand it's need to be album title
track.

All that and I get to hear it again very soon on the Ģ15 wrist
band usb. To quote Folgate, us Madness fans in London this week...

&quot;We are living like Kings&quot;

AXE CAM IN THE STUDIO

Studio videos that offer the smallest of glimpses, into the
recording of new tracks. A snip of Idiot child, and a song called,
Misson from Hell are audible within the studio videos. The later
written by Lee we are told. With a click track over a Barso piano
piece. Plus a new track called MKII which is the name of a jaguar.
Yes that's right Driving in My Car was not quite one but this is!

The New Song is two minutes according to the text on it's
page. Makes me wonder if this is some kind of intro
possibly the track This is London. There are small echo's
of Carl's Velvet Ghost music from 'Viva Londinium' in it.
Which makes me guess at such things.

<title>GRANDSTAND STATION: LAST STOP THE O2 ARENA</title>
<link>http://www.mis-online.net/mis/Article41.html</link>
<description>
The O2 Arena. Awesome venue. Purpose built arena with an entertainment
avenue of restaurants, bars and clubs, oh and an ice rink and chill
out bubble, and a cinema, and a museum to ancient Egypt's Tutankhamun,
all with it's own tube station for easy access.

The 02 staff told us that, Tutankhamun woke up during Night Boat to
Cairo and wandered around the main street area until the cold from the
ska ice rink froze him up again, and they could put him back into the
exhibit.

You can buy this gig on CD now from &quot; Concert Live &quot; website.

<title>RETURN OF THE GENTLEMAN GEEZERS</title>
<link>http://www.mis-online.net/mis/Article37.html</link>
<description>The Telegraph talks to Chris and Woody and Suggs..

As Madness prepare for a new tour, the masters of joyous English pop tell Thomas H Green why they fight shy of celebrity

Also appearing at London's 02 arena in December are Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen and the Spice Girls, yet there's a sense that the heritage-rock industry has not yet canonised Madness.

&quot;Don't start me off,&quot; says Madness guitarist Chris Foreman.

&quot;I can't stand The X Factor, all that. The thing about Simon Cowell, look at anything he's created - it never has any artistic merit. The mind boggles - Louis Walsh, 29 No 1s and you can't remember one of them.

<title>NEWS OF THE WORLD Interview</title>
<link>http://www.mis-online.net/mis/Article35.html</link>
<description>MADNESS legend Suggs is reminiscing about the great days being in Britain's most fun band and ranting about the manufactured pop acts currently wowing the public on X Factor.  &quot;

It's all just theatre, isn't it?&quot; he says.  &quot;There's nothing real going on there. They've got it down to a fine art, haven't they?  &quot;They've got them crying in every single f***ing shot, innit? So I've just got a bit bored of it, to be perfectly honest.&quot;  &quot;We just did something inadvertently when we were kids. A lot of the music business today is press-driven and PR-driven. Frankly, it's boring. People see through it.  &quot;We were just mates and we did something about community and family and getting on together. We weren't going to wait for someone to stick us on a TV talent show.  &quot;We just wanted to be out there having fun - and I think we did. That's why it's so great to be back.&quot;
